JMM returns to Spotify’s “Papuri” playlist, offering music for prayer as Holy Week approaches

As the Church moves into the final days of Lent, the tone shifts.

Prayers grow quieter. Reflections deepen. And for many, the search is simple: how to stay close to Christ in a time marked by suffering—both His and the world’s.

Into that space, the Jesuit Music Ministry (JMM) returns to Spotify’s Papuri playlist, curating a selection of sacred music that invites listeners not just to hear, but to pray as well.

This latest takeover features songs from Himig Heswita, Bukas Palad Music Ministry, and Hangad—beloved voices long associated with Filipino liturgical life. Together, they form a quiet but steady companion for the faithful entering Passiontide, the more solemn stretch leading into Holy Week.

The playlist’s visual centerpiece is as striking as its music: a crucifix carried by Jesuits during the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution. It is an image rooted in history, but one that resonates today—at a time when many again face uncertainty, conflict, and fatigue. In that sense, the playlist becomes more than a collection of songs. It becomes a space where memory, prayer, and present struggle meet.

Among its featured tracks is “I Seek You For I Thirst,” performed by Bukas Palad and drawn from Psalm 63. Its lines are simple and almost disarming:

“Though many times I run from you in shame
I lift my hands and call upon Your name
For underneath the shadow of Your wings
My melody is You.”

In these words, the movement of Lent becomes clear—not perfection, but return.
Not certainty, but wholehearted trust.

This marks JMM’s latest collaboration with Spotify’s Papuri playlist, a platform that has increasingly brought Filipino sacred music to a wider audience. Previous takeovers have accompanied major liturgical seasons, from Holy Week to Advent, offering curated soundtracks that meet people in the ordinary rhythms of life—on commutes, in quiet rooms, in moments of prayer.

For JesCom and JMM, the effort reflects a broader mission: to bring faith into the spaces people already inhabit. In this case, a digital playlist becomes a form of ministry—one that reaches beyond church walls and into daily experience.

As Holy Week draws near, the invitation is both simple and demanding: to walk with Christ, to remain with Him in His suffering, and to listen more closely.
