As part of its long-standing tradition of producing acclaimed Lenten programs, Jesuit Communications (JesCom) presents “HIMIG”, a powerful documentary exploring how Catholic music strengthens faith. Airing on GMA-7 this Black Saturday, April 19, at 7:30 AM, the upcoming Holy Week special shines a light on the transformative power of sacred music in the lives of Filipino Catholics.

Faith in Every Note

“HIMIG” follows the faith journeys of three individuals whose devotion to music has become a source of strength in their struggles. The documentary features:

  • A convict-turned-composer who found redemption and purpose in the prison music ministry.
  • A longtime choir member who continues to serve in worship despite battling renal failure.
  • An OFW in Hong Kong who leads her parish choir, using music as her spiritual anchor while working far from home.

Through their stories, “HIMIG” reflects on the power of music as a divine instrument of faith, healing, and service.

Honoring the Legends of Filipino Liturgical Music

For the first time in Philippine media, “HIMIG” brings together the voices behind some of the most beloved Filipino church songs. The documentary retraces the legacies of Fr. Eduardo Hontiveros, SJ, regarded as the Father of Filipino Liturgical Music, whose compositions continue to inspire generations of liturgical musicians, and National Artist Lucio San Pedro

A proud son of Molo, Iloilo, Fr. Honti composed over 400 liturgical hymns, including “Papuri sa Diyos,” “Luwalhati,” and “Pananagutan, despite having no formal music training.  Through interviews with the esteemed Jesuit’s mentees—Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Fr. Manoling Francisco, SJ, and Fr. Arnel Aquino, SJ“HIMIG” offers a glimpse into how his music shaped the way Filipinos pray and worship.

Meanwhile, Lucio San Pedro, known for his patriotic and religious compositions, enriched Philippine music by writing hymns for festivals and church rituals in his hometown of Angono, Rizal. The documentary revisits his enduring influence through testimonials from choir members who continue to use his music in religious celebrations.

A Celebration of Music and Worship

Adding depth to the documentary’s storytelling, musical performances from the Bukas Palad Music Ministry, the Philippine Madrigal Singers, Banda Uno, and the Pansol Choir will accompany these inspiring narratives, bringing to life the vibrant spirit of Filipino liturgical music.

With 18 previous Holy Week specials to its name, JesCom continues its mission of media evangelization, by creating award-winning productions that bring faith closer to people’s hearts.
