As the much-anticipated grand tribute concert, “LUWALHATI SA DIYOS: The Legacy of Fr. Honti” draws near, the excitement continues to build.
Set for October 12, 2024, at the Henry Lee Irwin Theater, Ateneo de Manila University, this musical celebration of the life and work of Fr. Eduardo Hontiveros, SJ—affectionately known as “Fr. Honti”—is poised to be a monumental event, honoring the Father of Filipino Liturgical Music. The concert will be the crowning jewel of Honti @100, a year-long celebration marking Fr. Honti’s Centennial Birth Anniversary, while laying the groundwork for future generations of liturgical music.
With less than a month to go, here’s a sneak peek of what awaits audiences in this unforgettable evening of music and faith.
A Stellar Lineup of Performances
Under the music direction of the renowned Mr. Mark Anthony Carpio, choirmaster of the Philippine Madrigal Singers, the tribute concert will feature some of the most iconic names in Filipino liturgical music. Performing some of Fr. Honti’s most beloved works will be Bukas Palad Music Ministry and Hangad, beloved chorale groups whose soulful hymns have become JMM fan favorites throughout the decades.
Audiences can also look forward to performances by notable choirs who have shared personal ties with Fr. Honti, such as Pansol Choir and Tinig Barangka, whose original members were mentored by the acclaimed composer.
Fr. Honti’s trailblazing spirit would then inspire his fellow Jesuits. 1981 eventually saw the release of Himig Heswita, an album celebrating 400 years since the arrival of the Jesuits in the country. Hence, the Jesuit Music Ministry (JMM) traces its rich heritage to the pioneering work of Fr. Honti, and carries forth his legacy by producing liturgical, as well as inspirational and religious music as the official music ministry of the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus.
Also set to take the stage are newer ensembles like Koro Ilustrado, a premier all-male chorale known for their unique interpretations of Filipino choral music, and the Young Voices of the Philippines, showcasing the future of Filipino liturgical music with their fresh and youthful voices.
Adding a touch of instrumental excellence, Jay Gomez, the celebrated flutist, will offer meditative renditions of some of Fr. Honti’s classics. Also gracing the stage will be Musica Chiesa, a chamber instrumental ensemble that continues to serve God through its vibrant and heartfelt performances, joined by musician friends of the Jesuits, to form an impressive 25-piece orchestra.
Special guest performers are also expected to make surprise appearances, ensuring that “LUWALHATI SA DIYOS: The Legacy of Fr. Honti” will be filled with star-studded moments.
Songs That Define Faith
The repertoire for “LUWALHATI SA DIYOS” is nothing short of legendary. Audiences will be transported through the timeless compositions of Fr. Hontiveros, with selections including “Pananagutan,” Kahanga-hanga,” and “Magnificat.” These hymns have not only shaped Filipino liturgical music but have also become cultural symbols, familiar to every Filipino Catholic’s Mass-going experience. Many of Fr. Honti’s compositions are sung across generations, binding together the young and old through shared worship.
Additionally, the concert will showcase the talents of Fr. Manoling Francisco, SJ, a modern torchbearer of Filipino liturgical music who was deeply inspired by Fr. Honti. His classic works further highlight the continuing evolution of liturgical music in the Philippines.
More Than Just a Concert
Beyond a musical spectacle, “LUWALHATI SA DIYOS” serves as a fundraiser for the PURIHI’T PASALAMATAN: The Fr. Eduardo Hontiveros, SJ Liturgical Music Competition, an initiative dedicated to fostering new liturgical compositions in the vernacular. As part of the Jesuit Music Ministry’s ongoing efforts to promote, preserve, and renew Filipino sacred music, the competition aims to inspire the next generation of composers and musicians to continue Fr. Honti’s legacy of evangelization through music.
By supporting this concert, sponsors, and donors will not only be celebrating a century of liturgical music shaped by Fr. Honti but will also be investing in the future of sacred music in the Philippines. The competition provides opportunities for collaboration and community-building, ensuring that the rich tradition of Filipino liturgical music will endure and evolve.
Be Part of a Musical Milestone
As October 12th fast approaches, “LUWALHATI SA DIYOS” indeed promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime event, celebrating both the storied history and the future of Filipino liturgical music. Don’t miss the chance to be part of this historic concert honoring the life and enduring legacy of Fr. Eduardo Hontiveros, SJ, whose music continues to resonate in the hearts of Filipino Catholics.
