Radyo Katipunan 87.9 FM, the community radio station of the Ateneo de Manila University and its neighboring areas, secured a spot in the prestigious list of winners of the 2023 Spirit of College Radio Awards. The award, presented by the College Radio Foundation, recognizes outstanding efforts made by college radio stations during the global celebration of World College Radio Day held on October 6, 2023.

Out of hundreds of participating stations worldwide, Radyo Katipunan emerged as the sole radio station from Asia and the Philippines to be honored with this distinction. The achievement marks another milestone for the station, following its previous recognition with the 2020 Spirit of College Radio Award.

The Jesuit Communications-managed station was chosen by the organizing team of World College Radio Day, a global event that unites enthusiasts to celebrate the significant contribution of college radio. Radyo Katipunan’s selection highlights not only its dedication to the annual World College Radio Day, but also its embodiment of the passion and mission of college radio.

Among the other esteemed college radio stations recognized were Aggie Radio 92.3 KBLU-LP (Utah State University, USA), 90.5 KCSU FM Fort Collins (Colorado State University, USA), 90.5 WUMC Milligan Radio (Milligan University,USA), WESS 90.3FM (East Stroudsburg University, USA), WMCO 90.7 FM (Muskingum University, USA),  WOLF Radio and WOLF Sports Network (University of West Georgia, USA), WPTS-FM (University of Pittsburgh, USA), The Vox Populi (The University of Fiji), and Unica Radio (Università degli Studi di Cagliari, Italy).

Hosting Radyo Katipunan’s segment during the 24-hour global marathon broadcast was once again the dynamic duo of Maxine Cruz, host of RK’s pop culture show “New Wave,” and Teo Ricaforte, RK’s digital media coordinator and host of “Katipunan Roundup.” The event was live-streamed via Radyo Katipunan 87.9 FM’s social media pages and youtube.com/radyokatipunanfm, as well as via online audio stream at zeno.fm/rk879fm.

Dr. Rob Quicke, Founder of College Radio Day, expressed his congratulations to all the winning stations, commending their brilliant efforts. He emphasized that last year’s theme, “Where All Voices Are Welcome,” indeed inspired many stations to produce 24 hours of extraordinary events and programming.

2023 marked a landmark year for Radyo Katipunan as it celebrated not only its fifth year participating in the global event, but also its milestone fifth anniversary. The station, operating under the theme “Overdrive,” saw the return of hosts and guests to its newly revamped studio after three years of remote broadcasting due to pandemic restrictions.

Radyo Katipunan’s success in the worldwide celebration of World College Radio Day underscores its role as a vital platform for truthful communication and values-driven programming, embodying the Jesuit spirit of promoting dialogue, diversity, and inclusivity.

As it looks forward to 2024, Radyo Katipunan aims to build on its glowing recognition and maintain its commitment to being a global voice for college radio.
