On to the MMFF.

“GomBurZa”, the highly-anticipated historical film produced by Jesuit Communications (JesCom) and MQuest Ventures in cooperation with CMB Film Services, is now an official entry to the 2023 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).

On Tuesday, October 17, MMFF Overall Chairman Atty. Don Artes announced the six additional entries for the festival’s 49th edition, based on finished film submissions. In total, this year’s MMFF will have 10 movies in its fold, expanding its traditional eight-film lineup.

Joining “GomBurZa” in the final six are fellow newcomers “When I Met You in Tokyo,” “Becky and Badette,” “Mallari,” “Firefly,” and “Broken Hearts Trip.” Completing the MMFF’s 2023 lineup are first-four entries “A Mother and Son’s Story,” “(K)Ampon,” “Penduko,” and “Rewind”, all announced last July.

“Our inclusion to the MMFF presents a huge opportunity, as more audiences will be reached by our evangelical message,” remarked JesCom Executive Director and GomBurZa Executive Producer Fr.Nono Alfonso,SJ about the groundbreaking news.

“We will gain a much deeper appreciation for the Church’s integral role in Philippine history and the emergence of the nation.”

JesCom Creative Director and GomBurZa Producer Pauline Mangilog-Saltarin further added her elation about the film’s breakthrough inclusion to the MMFF.

“We are so happy that a small production company like JesCom gets to join the country’s biggest film event,” she expressed.

“We are grateful for our partners MQuest Ventures and CMB Film Services for working with us, as well as the exceptionally talented collaborators like director Pepe Diokno and cinematographer Carlo Mendoza.”

The exciting development comes just days after “GomBurZa’s” official teaser trailer dropped, last Thursday, October 12. The one-minute clip provides a sneak peek into how Filipino priests Mariano Gomes, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora made their gallant stand against Spanish authorities and ignited a sense of nationalism in their countrymen that ultimately paved the way for the revolution.

The trailer further describes the hero-priests as “Ang nagsindi ng alab sa puso ng mga Pilipino” (They who ignited the hearts of the Filipino), with their trial and execution posing the riveting question, “Buhay pa ba ang alab sa puso mo?” (Is the fire in your heart still burning?).

Directed by Pepe Diokno, “GomBurZa” stars Dante Rivero as Padre Mariano Gomes, Cedrick Juan as Padre Jose Burgos, and Enchong Dee as Padre Jacinto Zamora. Piolo Pascual, in his special participation, plays the role of Padre Pedro Pelaez who was Burgos’ mentor.

Joining “GomBurZa’s” all-star cast are Ketchup Eusebio, Elijah Canlas, Epi Quizon, Jaime Fabregas, Carlitos Siguion-Reyna, Khalil Ramos, Neil Ryan Sese, Paolo O’Hara, Tommy Alejandrino, Gerry Kaimo, Dylan Ray Talon, Jomari Angeles, Bon Lentejas, and more.

“GomBurZa” hits theaters this December 25th.
