Pasay City — In a triumphant moment for Jesuit Communications Foundation (JesCom), Fr. Eli Rowdy Lumbo SJ’s inspiring book, “Redemption Behind Bars,” emerged victorious, clinching the prestigious Best Book in Ministry title at the 17th Cardinal Sin Catholic Book Awards. The announcement was made on September 15, 2023, during the Manila International Book Fair at the SMX Convention Center.

The award ceremony, held on the second day of the Manila International Book Fair, marked a significant milestone for JesCom, which participated in the event at AISLE J, Booth no. 228. “Redemption Behind Bars” earned recognition for its poignant exploration of redemption, forgiveness, and second chances, themes that resonate deeply with the essence of faith, reminding us of God’s boundless grace and the transformative power of spirituality.

Fr. Eli Lumbo, SJ, the book’s author and former Executive Director of the Philippine Jesuit Prison Service, shared his heartfelt gratitude in a recent Facebook post: “I never expected to be nominated for a book award and more so, be named the winner! Having been assigned in the Philippine Jesuit Prison Service for years was a gift in itself. I heard stories which really were testaments to the reality of God’s love for all. That was and still is a gift I will always be grateful for. I am humbled!”

“Redemption Behind Bars” traces Fr. Eli’s profound journey through over a decade of prison ministry, sharing the stories of persons deprived of liberty (PDL) whom he encountered during his service. These deeply moving accounts have now been compiled into his book, providing a unique window into the lives of those seeking redemption and hope within the confines of incarceration.

During a previous interview on Radyo Katipunan 87.9 FM’s “The Parable Café,” Fr. Eli emphasized the transformational power of his ministry: “I just wanted to share stories that touched people’s lives. For people to know the stories of those behind bars who were judged by society but witnessed the grace of God — light in the darkness, hope in despair.”

As “Redemption Behind Bars” continues to touch the lives of readers, it serves as a powerful testament to the unyielding love and forgiveness that God offers to all. Fr. Eli hopes that the book inspires readers to see beyond societal judgments and recognize God’s redemptive presence in every individual, no matter their past.

JesCom extends its heartfelt congratulations to Fr. Eli Lumbo, SJ, for this well-deserved recognition and expresses gratitude to all readers and supporters who have made this journey of faith and redemption possible.

As “Redemption Behind Bars” continues to shine its light, may it remind us all of the boundless grace that guides our steps, even in the darkest of times.
