Mass of Life: A Mass Setting for Children

Jude B. Roldan

… ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.’ —Matthew 18:3-5 (NIV)

Followers of Christ are enjoined to become child-like in expressing their faith to enter the kingdom of God. But how does one become like a child as told in the scriptures? At the same time, how can one cultivate a child’s understanding of God’s love and glory to deepen their faith?

The title of the mass setting explains it all. It is inspired by the expanded church saying “lex orandi, lex credendi, lex vivendi”, generally means that as we pray, so we believe, and so we live. How we express our faith through worship mirrors our values and beliefs, consequently affecting the way we act and live. Sharing our time and effort in the Eucharistic celebration is a step towards a greater goal —- to internalize, imbibe, and enliven the Eucharist through our personal lives and our interactions with others. This truth sets forth that understanding the Mass is an essential objective in order to enrich our lives.

This dignified mass setting for children and parishioners of all ages is perfect for any Sunday Mass and festive occasions. Originally written in 2005, the music was revised for the 2010 Revised Order of Mass. It features melodic motifs, gentle, and lyrical lines that interweave with celestial descants and lilting accompaniment evoke a sense of joy and peace. The conscientious writing of vocal lines highlights scholarly writing for young voices. The setting in its entirety is singable and succinct.

This initiative was composed in the hopes that it would encourage a more profound and devout participation in the rites of our faith, particularly in the Eucharist.
