For many Filipinos, some of life’s most sacred moments follow a familiar soundtrack.
A parish choir softly singing Pananagutan after Communion. A couple beginning married life to the strains of Tanging Yaman. Retreatants finding silence and healing through Sa ‘Yo Lamang. Across churches, schools, homes, and communities, these songs have accompanied generations of Filipinos in prayer and worship.
In thanksgiving for this shared musical heritage, Jesuit Communications (JesCom) and the Jesuit Music Ministry (JMM) will present BAYAN UMAWIT: Ignatian Music Festival 2026 on July 4 at 7 p.m. at the New Frontier Theater in Araneta City. The landmark concert marks the 45th anniversary of Himig Heswita, the 40th anniversary of Bukas Palad, and the 35th anniversary of Hangad—three music ministries whose songs have become woven into the spiritual life of countless Filipinos.

Rooted in the pioneering vision of the esteemed “Father of Filipino Liturgical Music,” Fr. Eduardo Hontiveros, SJ, these ministries emerged from the call of the Second Vatican Council to encourage the active participation of the faithful in the liturgy. Through music written in the Filipino vernacular and inspired by Ignatian spirituality, generations of composers, musicians, and singers have sought to proclaim the Gospel through song.
Yet the story of these ministries does not belong to them alone.
Their music has endured because parish choirs, music ministers, schools, religious communities, and families embraced these songs and made them their own. Through decades of Sunday Masses, weddings, retreats, recollections, and quiet moments of prayer, ordinary believers have carried these melodies from one generation to the next.
Held during Ignatian Month, BAYAN UMAWIT is more than a concert. It is a gathering of thanksgiving—a tribute to a living tradition that continues to inspire faith, community, and service. Joining Himig Heswita, Bukas Palad, and Hangad for this once-in-a-generation celebration is one of the country’s most beloved vocal groups, The CompanY, whose four decades of artistry have likewise made them a decorated pillar of Original Pilipino Music.
As the Church continues its mission of evangelization in a changing world, sacred music remains a powerful way of bringing people together and drawing hearts closer to God. Through the years, JesCom and JMM have remained committed to forming communities of faith through song, helping Filipinos encounter the Gospel not only through words, but also through melody.
More than a celebration of anniversaries, BAYAN UMAWIT is a celebration of a people who have prayed together through song.
And as these beloved hymns continue to echo in churches and homes across the country, the invitation remains open: to sing once more, to give thanks, and to help carry this homegrown gift of faith to generations yet to come.
